Finally, C4, the collaborative chorus that I founded in 2005, has its final concerts of the season in New York City this week. This edition is a co-presentation with Fireworks Ensemble, an “amplified chamber band,” and features four new pieces ranging from a proggy setting of Victorian poetry to a rock musical Requiem to something that’s perhaps best described as an random word generator on crack. The concerts include our debut at (Le) Poisson Rouge on May 30, though I’ll be singing only in the June 2 performance. More information and tickets are available here.

Especially if you live in the New York City metro region, you’ll have a number of chances to see me in public in the near future. I also have some exciting things lining up for the summer, and I’ll be sure to share those with you when the time comes. In the meantime, though, here’s my speaking schedule for late February through March:

Sunday, February 26
State of NYC Dance Symposium
(I’ll be speaking on the “Data on NYC Dance” panel from 11-12:15 about Fractured Atlas’s research on fiscally sponsored dance projects with Carrie Blake.)

Saturday, March 10
“Innovative Strategies in Arts Leadership”
organized by Emerging Leaders of New York Arts and the Pratt Institute Arts & Cultural Management Program
Gina Gibney Dance Center
890 Broadway, 5th Floor
New York, NY
6:30 – 8pm, reception to follow

March 23-25
Arts Enterprise Summit
Claremont Graduate University
160 East 10th Street
Claremont, CA
Info and registration
(I’ll be giving a workshop on “The Well-Informed Arts Professional” from 1:30-2:45pm on Saturday the 24th.)

During this time period, I’ll also be guest lecturing on “Arts, Economics, and Community Development” for Maria Guralnik’s “Making the Case for the Arts” class at Purchase College this coming Monday, and participating in a student colloquium at NYU on the subject of “Social Entrepreneurship in the Arts” on March 30. Unfortunately, those events aren’t open to the public, but wish me luck anyway!

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that C4, the collaborative chorus that I founded in 2005 and rejoined this past fall, isperforming twice next week in New York City. The concert is called “A Loss for Words” and features all music with either no or nontraditional lyrics, all composed within the past 25 years. You can learn more and buy tickets (powered by Fractured Atlas’s artful.ly ticketing system) here.

PS – this post was inspired in part by my recent discovery that a couple of panels that I’ve participated on in yesteryear were recorded and were subsequently posted to the web for public consumption. If you’re curious, here are a few that I didn’t know were available. If I find more, I’ll post them here or create an archive elsewhere on the site.

I’m actually singing in this concert because the scheduling worked out enough for me to be a part of the Symphonic Chorus. The group sounds great, programming some difficult, rarely heard stuff alongside reliable (but still cutting-edge) favorites like Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst. Plus, there’s percussion accompaniment to most of the pieces! Hell yeah!

<o :p></o>In the next few weeks, I’m going to try to kick up the blog activity a notch. I’ve found that writing for Createquity has much in common with composing for me: it’s extremely rewarding, but easy to fall down on the priority list. Not surprising that both have been getting pushed aside in recent months, given my more-intense-than-anticipated spring semester at SOM. On the bright side, though, I’m singing with C4 Symphonic Chorus again in their final concert of the year, “hit it,” which will also feature the world premiere of my new piece She Didn’t Mean to Do It.<o :p>

</o>I’ll be back with some thoughts about b-school later today or tomorrow.

Next Sunday, the 24th, I will make my debut with the Yale Recital Chorus in a performance of Nicholas Flagello‘s little-known work The Passion of Martin Luther King for chorus and orchestra, directed by Yale School of Music MMA candidate Sooyeon Lee. The piece is actually quite nice, with quasi-tonal chromaticism and occasional jazz inflections woven subtly through an otherwise fairly traditional take on the requiem format. The concert takes place at 4pm at Trinity Lutheran Church at the corner of Orange and Wall Streets in New Haven, and is free and open to the public.

The previous evening, old friends C4 will be presenting an all-chamber-chorus concert entitled Under Rainbows at the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in New York City. I am familiar with some of the pieces that will be on this concert and they all sound great. Info about the concert at the link above.

Finally, I completed a new choral piece of my own in December, a setting of a poem by Daisy Fried called She Didn’t Mean to Do It. I’ll let you know when it receives its first performance.

Stay tuned for more thoughts on effective philanthropy next!

…and welcome to Createquity, hosted by your friendly first-year MBA student, Ian Moss. The purpose of this blog is to shed light on some management issues in the arts (i.e., economics, marketing conundrums, societal impact, etc.) with a special focus on philanthropy. My background is in the performing arts, specifically music, so a lot of what I write will be coming from that perspective. I’ll also give a running commentary on my education and experiences at the Yale School of Management, tying what I learn to the subject of this blog whenever possible.

By way of introduction, I am a composer and singer who took a circuitous path to my current field—I was a computer geek for the first 17 years of my life before I discovered music. (OK, technically I was only a computer geek from about age 7 onward, but it feels like I had the bug at birth.) Since then, I’ve written two “rock symphonies” for senior projects in high school and college, founded a collaborative chorus called C4 and an electric chamber ensemble in which I sang through a guitar effects processor, and worked in fundraising for several arts organizations, most recently the American Music Center. I’m now at SOM trying to understand how everything I’ve been doing for the past 10 years fits in to a broader social and practical context. Won’t you help me along the way by commenting on my posts and writing me fascinating and/or witty emails? I can be reached at ian.moss@yale.edu. Look forward to hearing from you.
