Each year since 2013, Createquity has taken a moment to gather its globally-dispersed editorial team all in one place for an intense session of planning and wonkery. What originated as a half-day meeting for three people in 2013 has mushroomed this year into a 10-person, 2.5-day extravaganza. The 2016 Createquity annual retreat will take place in our nation’s capital, and to celebrate, we’d like to invite you, dear reader, to a free reception on Monday, June 27. What could be better than mingling with your fellow big thinkers in the arts over some tea-cured salmon bites and crudité?

Here are the details:

Calling all Americans for the Arts attendees and statheads in and around the windy city: we are taking over Chicago!

We are thrilled to announce not one, but two opportunities to geek out with us in person:

On Sunday, June 14 at 9:00 a.m. we will lead a full-length discussion session at the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention. “Building the Capacity to Create Change in Our Sector” will give you the inside scoop on how our 2014 shift in strategic direction came about, what our research process has to say about systemic change, and how it all applies in the real world. We’ll have ample opportunity for small-group dialogue, so this session is not to be missed. Information on registering for the convention is here.

Shortly afterwards, join us to continue the conversation and/or decompress at a special Welcome Reception for our readers and special guests. We will gather at the Chicago Cultural Center at 1:00 p.m. to meet, mingle, and unwind. The reception is free and you do not have to be an AFTA attendee to attend. If you will be at the conference, however, it’ll be a great way to wrap up your stay before heading to the airport. RSVP no later than June 1.

Hope to see you in June!

After a year’s hiatus, Grantmakers in the Arts has resumed its practice of retaining bloggers to provide official coverage of its annual conference, which this year takes place on October 6-9 in Philadelphia, PA. The official conference blogger role is an important transparency measure because the GIA Conference is a closed convening; only grantmakers and invited guests are eligible to attend. This policy is in place ostensibly to “preserve the capacity for open discussion,” which of course makes you wonder what they’re talking about even more. I had the incredible honor of serving as GIA’s inaugural conference blogger for the organization’s 2009 convening in Brooklyn, NY, and those entries are still available for reading here.

I’m happy to report that not only will I be reprising the official conference blogger role in 2013 along with esteemed writers Diane Ragsdale and Barry Hessenius, but we were able to work it out to have Createquity’s entire editorial staff – Talia Gibas, Daniel Reid, and me – together in Philly to provide full team coverage. We’ll be writing up our general impressions along with daily reports, and might even have a few tricks up our sleeve as well. This is exciting for us not just because of the opportunity to provide a window into GIA for the rest of the arts community, but also because it’s probably the only time for the foreseeable future that our bicoastal editorial team will be able to be and work together in person. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

That leads us to our second announcement, which is that we could hardly have all these great Createquity people in one place without hosting an Office Hours event to celebrate. The Philly Office Hours will be a post-dinner affair on Monday, October 7, and although it will be at the conference hotel bar, all are welcome to attend whether you’re part of the GIA conference or not. As a reminder, Createquity Office Hours is an informal gathering in which we turn a bar into Arts Nerd Central. Come with your questions, ideas, requests for career advice, whatever — it’s a great way for us to get to know some of you a little better and, more importantly, for you all to meet each other. We look forward to seeing some of Createquity’s readers from the City of Brotherly Love!

As you can see from my previous post, I get around a lot these days for conferences and the like. Meanwhile, the network of Createquity Writing Fellows past and present is ever growing, and we now have representation in seven cities from coast to coast.

So we’ve decided to try out a new concept here at Createquity: Office Hours. Any time one or more Createquity writers and I are in the same city, we’re going to occupy a bar (or in this first case, a food court) and turn it into Arts Nerd Central. Ever wanted to meet any of us in person? Here’s your chance: come with your questions, ideas, requests for career advice, whatever. It will be great way for us to get to know some of our readers a little better and, more importantly, for you all to meet each other!

Our inaugural Createquity Office Hours event will be in Chicago on November 14. Aaron Andersen, one of the original Createquity Writing Fellows (and an original all around), will join me for lunch at Foodlife, a fun and creative food court downtown. If this goes well, we’ll start planning others in a city near you!
